Parasaurolophus walkeri

Parasaurolophus was a duck-billed dinosaur from the Late Cretaceous of North America. It is famous for the long, backward-curving bony crest on its head, which was hollow inside. It could probably use it to make deep sounds. It grew to about 7.5 to 9.5 metres long and walked on two or four legs.

In 1920 a team from the University of Toronto found a skull and partial skeleton on the Red Deer River in Alberta, Canada. William Parks described it in 1922 as Parasaurolophus walkeri. Two more species were later added from New Mexico and Utah: P. tubicen and the short-crested P. cyrtocristatus. Parasaurolophus is rare; there are only a few good finds.
The crest is formed by the nasal bones. The airways run through it as long tubes. Studies of these tubes suggest that the crest acted as a resonating chamber for deep sounds, much like a wind instrument. It probably also helped animals recognise their own species. A young animal from Utah shows that the crest began to grow early in life.
The holotype of P. walkeri is estimated at about 9.5 metres long; an animal of this size probably weighed more than 5 tonnes. With its broad beak and many grinding teeth it ate plants. Like other hadrosaurs it probably foraged on all fours and ran on two legs.
