Microraptor was a tiny, feathered predatory dinosaur from the Early Cretaceous of China, hardly larger than a crow. It had long flight feathers not only on its arms but also on its legs, giving it four wings, so to speak. With them it could at least glide, perhaps even fly actively. Its plumage was iridescent black, like a starling's.

The first find had a strange backstory: its tail was part of the fake "Archaeoraptor", a piece assembled from several fossils and smuggled out of China. Today many well-preserved skeletons are known from the Jiufotang Formation in Liaoning, perhaps more than 300.

Microraptor is one of the smallest known non-bird dinosaurs: about 77 to 80 centimetres long, with a wingspan of around 90 to 100 centimetres and a mass of 0.5 to 1.9 kilograms. In 2003 Xu and colleagues described it as a "four-winged dinosaur". A diamond-shaped fan of feathers sat at the end of its tail.

Stomach contents show that it ate a varied diet: a bird, fish, lizards and a small mammal. In 2012 researchers studied tiny pigment bodies (melanosomes) in the feathers. Their shape and arrangement match iridescent black plumage. Microraptor shows how closely birds and predatory dinosaurs are related.

  • Sein Schwanz war Teil der berühmten Fälschung «Archaeoraptor».Its tail was part of the famous "Archaeoraptor" fake.6
  • Er hatte Flugfedern an Armen und Beinen, also «vier Flügel».It had flight feathers on its arms and legs, so "four wings".2
Its plumage was iridescent black, similar to a starling's.3
One skeleton contains a whole bird that Microraptor had swallowed head first.4

VerwandtschaftRelationships

Microraptor is a dromaeosaur, a close relative of Velociraptor and Deinonychus. Dromaeosaurs are very close to birds.6
