Desmatosuchus was an armoured plant-eater from the Late Triassic of North America, an aetosaur. It grew 4.5 to over 5 metres long and carried long spikes on its shoulders. It probably used its shovel-like snout to dig for soft plants. It belongs to the crocodile line and is not related to the armoured dinosaurs.

Der Name bedeutet etwa «Ketten-Krokodil».In the late 19th century Edward Drinker Cope described armour plates from Texas as Episcoposaurus haplocerus. Later Case named a partial skeleton Desmatosuchus spurensis. A 2008 revision made D. spurensis the type species, because Cope's material cannot be identified precisely. The name means roughly "link crocodile".

The body was armoured with rows of bony plates. At the sides the plates carried spike-like projections; the front spike was about 28 centimetres long and curved. Desmatosuchus weighed about 280 to 300 kilograms. The skull was small, the front of the snout toothless and probably covered in horn.

Remains of Desmatosuchus are common in the Dockum Group and the Chinle Formation; several skeletons close together suggest groups. Bones of Desmatosuchus have been found with skeletons of Postosuchus, which probably hunted it. Because of its similarity to armadillos, some researchers suspect that it also ate insects.

Aetosaurs had small heads, upturned snouts and four rows of bony plates. With their snouts and claws they could probably dig for roots and tubers, but could not dig burrows. Their remains are known from Europe, North and South America, parts of Africa and India. Besides D. spurensis, D. smalli is regarded as a second species of Desmatosuchus.

Wusstest du?Did you know?

  • Der vorderste Schulterstachel wurde rund 28 Zentimeter lang. The front shoulder spike grew to about 28 centimetres.3
Desmatosuchus is the only known aetosaur with such rows of spikes.3
It was probably the main plant-eater in its habitat.3
Its bones have been found together with skeletons of Postosuchus.3
Because aetosaur armour plates are so common, they are used to date rock layers of the Late Triassic.2

Was man nicht sicher weissWhat we don’t know for sure

What exactly it ate: soft plants, roots or also insects.3
Whether the different spike lengths distinguish males and females.3
  • Ob Desmatosuchus auch in Indien lebte.Whether Desmatosuchus also lived in India.3

VerwandtschaftRelationships

Desmatosuchus belongs to the aetosaurs, armoured pseudosuchians of the Triassic. They are in the crocodile line and not related to the armoured ankylosaurs. Besides D. spurensis, D. smalli has been described as a second species.1,2,3,5
