Ankylosaurus was an armoured plant-eater from the very end of the Cretaceous in North America. Its broad, low body was covered in bony plates, and a heavy bony club sat at the end of its tail. It probably grew 6 to 8 metres long. It lived at the same time as Tyrannosaurus and Triceratops.

In 1906 an American Museum of Natural History team led by Barnum Brown found the first skeleton in Montana; it was discovered by the collector Peter Kaisen. Brown described the animal in 1908. The name means roughly "stiffened lizard", because many bones are fused; magniventris means "great belly". No complete skeleton is known to this day.

Ankylosaurus is the largest known ankylosaur. The largest skull is about 64.5 centimetres long and 74.5 centimetres wide. Estimates of its length range from just over 6 to 8 metres, and of its mass from about 4.8 to 8 tonnes. Horns sat at the back of the skull, and bony half-rings protected the neck.

The tail club was made of fused vertebrae and large bony plates. A 2009 study showed that large clubs had enough force to break bones. Whether they were used against predators or in fights between rivals is open. With its broad snout Ankylosaurus probably ate low plants such as ferns and shrubs.

Wusstest du?Did you know?

In 1908 Brown reconstructed Ankylosaurus after the model of Stegosaurus, without a tail club; the club was not yet known.5
Brown took bony plates he found with a Tyrannosaurus in 1900 for its armour; they probably come from Ankylosaurus.3,5
The only known tail club of Ankylosaurus was found in Alberta in 1910.5
Small bones above the eyes probably gave them extra protection.5
It lived in the last few million years before the great extinction 66 million years ago.5

Was man nicht sicher weissWhat we don’t know for sure

What the tail club was mainly for: fending off predators or fights between rivals.4,5
How large Ankylosaurus really grew; there are only a few incomplete finds.2,3
What the winding cavities in the snout were for: heat and water balance or sounds.5

VerwandtschaftRelationships

Its closest relatives are probably Anodontosaurus and Euoplocephalus. Together with Stegosaurus it is one of the thyreophorans, the "shield bearers".2,5
