Coelophysis bauri

Coelophysis was a small, slender predatory dinosaur from the Late Triassic of the southwestern USA. It grew to about 3 metres long, but was very lightly built and ran fast on two legs. It probably hunted small, quick animals. A single site in New Mexico has yielded hundreds of its skeletons.

In 1881 the collector David Baldwin found the first bones in New Mexico. Edward Drinker Cope first described them in 1887 as species of Coelurus and in 1889 created the new genus Coelophysis, "hollow form", because of its hollow bones. In 1947 a team led by Edwin Colbert came across a layer with hundreds of skeletons at Ghost Ranch. In total, remains of at least 1,000 animals come from there.
Coelophysis grew to about 3 metres long and weighed an estimated 15 to 25 kilograms. Its neck and tail were long and thin, its head narrow with large, forward-facing eyes. Its wishbone is the oldest known in a dinosaur. With rather weak arms and small teeth it probably hunted much smaller animals.
For a long time Coelophysis was thought to be a cannibal, because some skeletons seemed to contain young animals. A 2006 study showed that these remains come from early crocodile relatives. In 2009 possible remains of a young Coelophysis in regurgitated material were described, so the question is not fully settled. Since 1981 Coelophysis has been the state fossil of New Mexico.
