Brachiosaurus was a huge, plant-eating long-necked dinosaur from the Late Jurassic of North America. Unlike most sauropods it had longer front legs than hind legs, so its back sloped down towards the tail. This probably let it reach leaves more than 9 metres up. It was about 18 to 22 metres long.

In July 1900 Harold William Menke, assistant to Elmer S. Riggs of the Field Columbian Museum in Chicago, found a huge upper arm bone near Fruita, Colorado. Riggs first took it for a thigh bone. In 1903 he described the animal as Brachiosaurus altithorax, "arm lizard" with a "deep chest". The skeleton is incomplete: arm, thigh, hip, parts of the spine and some ribs.

The holotype was not yet fully grown. Its mass is estimated at about 28 to 47 tonnes. Many size figures are based on Giraffatitan from Tanzania, which is known from much more complete remains. Giraffatitan was long regarded as Brachiosaurus brancai and was split off as a separate genus in 2009. Most familiar pictures of "Brachiosaurus" actually show Giraffatitan.

Brachiosaurus probably fed mainly on plants high up, so it hardly competed with other sauropods such as Diplodocus or Camarasaurus. It swallowed its food without chewing. Because of its build it could hardly rear up on its hind legs. It is rare in the Morrison Formation: a 2003 survey counted only 12 finds.

VerwandtschaftRelationships

Brachiosaurus gives its name to the Brachiosauridae, a family of sauropods with long front legs. Its close relative Giraffatitan from Tanzania used to be placed in the same genus.2,4
