SarcosuchusSarcosuchus
Sarcosuchus imperator

Sarcosuchus was a giant relative of today’s crocodiles and lived in the Early Cretaceous in Africa and South America. At about 9 to 12 metres long, it is one of the largest crocodile relatives that ever lived. It lived in rivers and probably ate fish, but likely dinosaurs too. Although it looked like a crocodile, it is only distantly related to living crocodiles.

An almost complete skull was discovered at Gadoufaoua in Niger in 1964 by a French team searching for uranium. France de Broin and Philippe Taquet described the species Sarcosuchus imperator in 1966. The name means roughly "flesh crocodile", after the Egyptian crocodile god Sobek. Teeth of a second species, S. hartti, had already been found in Brazil in the 1850s.
The best fossils were collected by a team led by Paul Sereno in 1997 and 2000 in the Elrhaz Formation in Niger, including several skulls. In 2001 Sereno and colleagues estimated a length of 11 to 12 metres and a weight of about 8 tonnes. Growth lines in the bony skin plates suggest that Sarcosuchus took 50 to 60 years to become fully grown. A 2019 study using head width as a measure arrived at smaller values of about 9 to 9.5 metres and 3.5 to 4.3 tonnes.
Sarcosuchus belongs to the pholidosaurids, an extinct group within Neosuchia, and is not directly related to living crocodiles. Unlike its closest relatives, which lived as fish-eaters along coasts, it inhabited river landscapes. Its sturdy teeth, which did not interlock, suggest a varied diet of fish and large vertebrates. Whether it tore apart prey with a "death roll" like modern crocodiles is doubtful.
